As many advanced PC users, sometimes I prefer terminal apps over GUIs. There are many reasons. Sometimes typing simple command is just quicker than waiting for GUI to load. Often typing with keyboard is much more comfortable than picking options with mouse (which BTW is why I hated OS X when I used it – way to often system forces you to use mouse, when there's no reason to be unable to do same thing using keyboard).
Also no need for GUI means application can work quickly on an old hardware or via ssh.
What are your favorite terminal apps? I'll start with some and add more later as I remember.
youtube-dl is a program that downloads online videos. Not only from youtube, like name might suggest – list of supported sites is quite impressive. Youtube-dl is really simple to use (
youtube-dl <site url>) but it also offers many options, like picking quality, downloading only sound or subtitles.
ffmpeg – one of most standard and powerful tools – allows to convert between different audio, video and animation formats. Very useful for scripting and quick convertions.
vim – you know this one.
task warrior – simple tool for keeping track of your projects and tasks.
cmus – my favorite music player. For some reason I can't find better one – including GUI ones.
ncdu – du + ncurses. For those who don't know what that means – it's a tool that calculates how much disc space different files/directories use. Useful when you wand to free some space, to analyze what takes up most.
