Adam-Stambaugh I'm not sure TBH. In my experience, I'm the outlier. Even talking to a lot really geeky "geeks" at work, school, etc....I just never really ran into many people that knew about encryption, open-source/FOSS, etc. Over the years, I've met a lot of people that I have a lot of things in common with. In my field (marketing), even the nerdiest of nerds aren't quite as experienced with tech as I am....which I always find surprising because I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable as most of the people I interact with online. These forums are a great example of that.
Idk. It was just really cool to find someone irl that has interests and passions beyond just gaming.
